Speed Racer...

... ok, I went to see this today and I can't hold in my thoughts any longer. I loved this movie! I admit to having my doubts to the way the movie would be done, especially about not seeing the actual Mach 5 in action but boy when I got in there, all my doubts proved to be unjustified. The movie looked beautiful yet surreal... kinda like the way I feel when I watch an episode of the Speed Racer anime.

I felt that they successfully updated the movie and brought the technology forward appropriately. This movie was flat out gorgeous and the racing scenes were beautiful but what I loved the most was the cross country part that brought the Mach 5 to life... I finally for to see a live action Mach 5 roaring across the screen in classic Speed Racer form! It was awesome! Can I say that enough?

In any case, I recommend this movie as a fun and heart racing movie. One word of caution, if you are prone to motion sickness, you might wanna take something before watching this movie. LOL!

Ok, let me get this out of the way... *ahem*

ZOMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!? IT WAS TEH AWESOMEZ!!!!!

*ahem* OK, now that I got that out of my system, Iron Man was a fantastic movie. It is one of the best superhero movies I have ever seen. I feel that ALL of the casting was inspired and perfect. You ever have one of those moments when you feel that the planets align just right & the time for a certain movie was upon you? Then they make the movie and it seems to be just right? That's how I feel about Iron Man. I LOVED it. I highly recommend this movie to my friends... hell, to everyone!! GO SEE IT!

Thought on the Speed Racer movie

OK, I had seen various trailers of the Speed Racer movie and I was thinking that I was just not seeing things right because sometimes the car he was driving looked like the Mach 5 and sometimes it didn't. Well, I have just watched all of the trailers from the Apple site and I am happy to say I wasn't seeing things. Apparently, he starts out in the Mach 5 but somewhere along the way, he gets an upgrade to what I call the Mach 6. No seriously, it has a 6 right there on the door. So what would you call it? Anyway, the movie looks awesome... like an anime come to life and I am soooooo stoked to see it!!!!

Joy: Wow, this is exciting. I'm having adventures in a magical world of gods, demons, and dragons. I love magic missile because it hits automatically! Weapon specialization? Cool. Double weapon specialization? Hell yeah! Hey, who's behind these giant attacks? Drow? Awesome!

Discontent: How come in basic D&D, elf and dwarf are classes? That's really stupid. "What do you do, good sir?" "Why, stout yeoman, I am an elf, professionally!" Duh. And speaking of classes, why are they so restrictive? And why are so many fighters exactly alike? If psionics are so rare, why is there at least one character in every party who has it? And someone with an 18/00 strength for that matter.

Anger: I need a frickin' dictionary just to read the DMG. This Gygaxian prose is killing me. And a harlot table? What the hell? That barbarian from Dragon Magazine should be called the super-fighter. And don't even get me started on the cavalier. And what's up with Greyhawk? It's geography makes no sense at all. And why does magic missile hit automatically and get better as you up in levels? That's totally broken. In fact, this entire game is broken!

Abandonment: Gygax was nothing but a hack with a thesaurus. Did you ever try to read one of his so-called novels? To hell with him and AD&D. He screwed over Dave Arneson anyway. I'm off to greener pastures. I hear Runequest is skill based and Glorantha is so authentically mythic. And Champions has point build character creation with advantages and disadvantages. And in Traveler, you can die right in character creation!

Exploration: All popular games are crap! I need to go to the furthest reaches of the imagination to find the game best suited to the unique snowflake that is me. What, you can find it in a store? That's not obscure enough! Keep on roll-playing, you drones. I am an artist and roleplaying is my form.

Nostalgia: Man, being artistic can be fufilling and all, but it's also hard work. I'm coming out of sessions emotionally wrung out and tired. Isn't this supposed to be my hobby? Remember when we used to play AD&D and we took on those slavers? Yeah, that was fun back then.

Return: It's true that Gygax could be a pompous ass at times, but whatever. He also took a tiny niche hobby helped spread it to millions around the world. And hell if playing some AD&D isn't still fun, even with its restrictive classes, arcane rules, and tortured grammar. Thanks for everything, Gary. We wouldn't have gone on this journey without you.

(So yeah... I sooo know someone this totally fits.... LOL.)

The DM of all DMs passes away...

Earlier today, I got word that the mother of one of my good friends has passed away. I wish him and his family my condolences in their time of grieving. She was a wonderful person and was the consummate hostess to me and my gamer geek friends. There was never a time when I showed up and was made to feel unwelcomed. When I stayed with them, she made sure to try to get us to eat some breakfast and just generally took care of us like her children. She will me missed greatly. *sigh*

On top of this, I saw this later:

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Gary Gygax, who co-created the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons and is widely seen as the father of the role-playing games, died Tuesday morning at his home in Lake Geneva. He was 69. He had been suffering from health problems for several years, including an abdominal aneurysm, said his wife, Gail Gygax.

Gygax and Dave Arneson developed Dungeons & Dragons in 1974 using medieval characters and mythical creatures. The game known for its oddly shaped dice became a hit, particularly among teenage boys, and eventually was turned into video games, books and movies.

Gygax always enjoyed hearing from the game's legion of devoted fans, many of whom would stop by the family's home in Lake Geneva, about 55 miles southwest of Milwaukee, his wife said. Despite his declining health, he hosted weekly games of Dungeons & Dragons as recently as January, she said.

''It really meant a lot to him to hear from people from over the years about how he helped them become a doctor, a lawyer, a policeman, what he gave them,'' Gail Gygax said. ''He really enjoyed that.''

Dungeons & Dragons players create fictional characters and carry out their adventures with the help of complicated rules. The quintessential geek pastime, it spawned a wealth of copycat games and later inspired a whole genre of computer games that's still growing in popularity.

Born Ernest Gary Gygax, he grew up in Chicago and moved to Lake Geneva at the age of 8. Gygax's father, a Swiss immigrant who played violin in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, read fantasy books to his only son and hooked him on the genre, Gail Gygax said.

Gygax dropped out of high school but took anthropology classes at the University of Chicago for a while, she said. He was working as an insurance underwriter in the 1960s, when he began playing war-themed board games.

But Gygax wanted to create a game that involved more fantasy. To free up time to work on that, he left the insurance business and became a shoe repairman, she said.

Gygax also was a prolific writer and wrote dozens of fantasy books, including the Greyhawk series of adventure novels.

Gary Sandelin, 32, a Manhattan attorney, said his weekly Dungeons & Dragons game will be a bit sadder on Wednesday night because of Gygax's passing. The beauty of the game is that it's never quite the same, he said.

Funeral arrangements are pending. Besides his wife, Gygax is survived by six children.
